Armbian - using kernel-config

About a year ago the Armbian build framework made its transition to the next generation. Tons of code have been rewritten, new features added, existing one were rewritten in Python from scratch. The main driving force behind it was Ricardo Pardini.

With this transition some build options regular users were quite familiar, KERNEL_CONFIGURE or CREATE_PATCHES for example, were deprecated and this lead to confusion and incomprehension, last but not least due to the more or less constant lack of detailed framework documentation. So users had to conjecture how things work from reading the code, forums and answers to issue reports.
This situation even forced the Armbian developers to bring back the old switches to some extend.

In today’s topic I want to break down kernel-config as the now modern way to configure your Linux kernel configuration before building.

Just a short follow-up to the Hetzner - Jitsi - story below.

Started exploring the usage of hcloud to compress the full setup down to a single command (presupposed that IPv4/IPv6 already exist and have proper A/AAAA-records attached).

Well, it works flawless :-)

Create a local cloud-init.yaml file and fill it with the #cloud-config stuff down below in the article. Get yourself the hcloud tool and run:

hcloud server create --datacenter 4 --image jitsi --name jitsi \
--type cax11 --user-data-from-file cloud-init.yaml \
--primary-ipv4 121345678 --primary-ipv6 12345679

Replace the server type and datacenter with something appropriate for the intended size and location of your meeting. Use hcloud primary-ip list to get the IDs.

Recently the so called BigBrotherAwards have been awarded. In the pool of winners this year were also the well known Zoom video conference tool. This made me thinking, because the Armbian project uses Zoom for their weekly developer meetups.

So I decided to invest a bit of time to explore if it would be possible to deploy a self-hosted Jitsi video-conference server on a Hetzner cloud server on demand, without much configuration needed. And this is what I came up with.

I really do enjoy the service of snipboard.io. It is straight forward, very easy and convenient to use and independent from operating system. Unfortunately it is closed source and I really wanted to have something similar as a self-hosted service.

The closest I could come up with to get something like or even more convenient was a combination of xbackbone on server-side and Shutter as client tool.

Running Nextcloud behind NGINX reverse proxy

tl;dr: Was bored and setup a Nextcloud instance behind a NGINX proxy and since I had some trouble to get it running properly I simply share my configs here. Maybe this helps somebody else.

My two main goals were forwarding client real IP addresses to Nextcloud and getting rid of NC’s warnings about running behind reverse proxy.

Nextcloud itself runs on a LAMP stack inside Ubuntu 22.04 LXC container. The reverse proxy is provided by NGINX running on the host machine which is also powered by Ubuntu 22.04.

Cloud NAS with local cache

While I was bored and had a spare NanoPi Neo3 laying around I though to myself why not make good use of it? With its small size, gigabit ethernet and a USB3 port it is the perfect board for creating servers or in this case a crude network storage. Some of you already read about it on Twitter.

Intentionally I did not plan to write an article about this project since I believe it is poorly hacked together and it also suffers from performance issues which I could solve partially at least. However to anticipate the excitement for all the Neo3 owners: I did not finish this project on this board and had to switch to a more expensive model to accomplish full speed. If you are fine with slower speeds it is still perfectly fine though.

Since my cloud backend would be Google I realized that this way I can access all the data on my phone as well simply by using the Drive app. This is comfortable but also concerning since I do not want to blindly send all my data plain to the cloud and simply trust a hugh company in the US. So I split it up into two shares: an unencrypted one for mobile access and an encrypted one for local access only.

I will cover both.

NanoPi R4S - router overkill?

Introduction

A few weeks ago I received the most recent board of FriendlyARM: the NanoPi R4S with 4G of memory.

With its lack of HDMI and other screen connectors this board is clearly designed for headless application like acting as a router, home server, network-attached storage (NAS), media station or everything together the same time. Paying 60$ plus shipping and tax might sound a bit much for a headless board but depending on the usage it can be well worth the money.

I have to admit I do not really know why I bought a board with dual gigabit NIC. I just knew I need to have it. Maybe I have a weakness for (powerful) headless SBCs 😄

Anyway let’s have a deeper look.

Introduction

As you might have already got through Twitter I recently received a Pinebook Pro. While it looks like a normal well made laptop from the outside its internals are way different than you are used to. There is no such thing like a BIOS/UEFI that greets you and it is quite likely that you are stuck with a blank screen if you do not know what you are doing.

Station P1 wedged between another box and a monitor

I have been using the Station P1 mini-computer for a while now and as already stated occasionally I am pretty happy with it. For the last couple of weeks it’s been used on daily basis. Fun fact: I am writing this article on it right now.
The main reason for that is its electric efficiency. While my main workstation wastes lots of power for mostly being idle all the time the Station P1 barely exceeds 20 watts of consumed power while being very busy. For comparison the graphics card in my desktop computer consumes twice the amount while being idle(!).

Each time I think about this NicoD comes to my mind for his description for desktop PCs as “giant space heaters”. There is a bit of truth in these words.

Armbian - using CREATE_PATCHES

The Armbian build script has a built-in method to automatically create patch files from changes you do within the sources.
The official documentation writes about this:

prompt right before the compilation starts to make changes to the source code, separate for U-Boot and kernel, and will create patch files out of this. If you want these patches are included in the normal run, you need to copy them to their appropriate directories.

While this basically puts stuff in a nutshell for beginners this could be a bit confusing. In this post I will show you step by step how this works in a practical example.

What is needed to start this process?
Where are the sources to edit?
Where are the created patches?
How to apply them next time you build?

The whole website has been reworked. Why? Because I can. After a very long time it is now time to say goodbye to Wordpress and say hello to Hugo.

What is Hugo?

Hugo is “The world’s fastest framework for building websites”. You can learn more here.

Simplified it takes your input files, which are formatted using the Markdown syntax, and a template and creates a ready to upload website from that.

There is no web interface or fancy WYSIWYG-editor thing. You can use any text editor, preferably one with syntax highlight or even a small IDE like VScode.

After editing the changes can be previewed locally by using

hugo server --disableFastRender --ignoreCache

which will provide a http server that serves the website on localhost. Once satisfied the output of the public folder is pushed to the webserver and the changes are live immediately.

VeraCrypt and Panfrost compile vs 1GB memory

Recently I needed to build mesa on my OrangePi One Plus to get the most out of the current Panfrost support. However the building always failed because the board locked itself up. Some research showed that it most likely ran out of memory.

A bit later I tried building VeraCrypt on a NanoPi Neo3 and after a while run into the same issue.

Armbian does ship zram with each board to get help get around the memory lacking a bit. However in these cases it simply was not enough.

What??

Sending a message to a webmaster with his public key… The idea behind this I actually got from an April fools released by c&t magazine. To cut a long story short they claimed that weak GDPR phrasing could be a reason that common letter post might need to be properly encrypted. They even provided a tool that extracts a websites public key use it to encrypt a provided message.

Anyway. I was thinking how I could use this to send webmasters encrypted messages when they do not offer public keys emailing. And for some reason I do not was to ask them for keys. Maybe because I am incredibly clever and shy at the same time … never mind.

Some basics

To get a basic understanding how symmetric and asymmetric encryption - to say the relationship between public and private keys - works just watch this video. I started adding captions in English. Hopefully they will be released into the wild soon.

A quick way to get yourself your LAN - well not ad-free but way ad-less.
This blog post will be some weird mix between this existing post [here]fixlater, updates for it and less verbiage.

Just a side note: Browser-based ad blocking is way more efficient rather than filtering using DNS filter lists. The reason for this is that those in-browsing scripts can adjust the appearance of a website directly while DNS based blocking simply does not allow content from specific domains to be loaded. Depending on the used browser the result may vary.
So why wasting time and money to set something up like this? Three reasons:

Especially on mobile devices you cannot simply install ad filtering software without enhanced access to your device (like “rooting”). Yes, there are apps like Block This! but maybe you need your VPN capabilities elsewhere
Other apps do not depend on browsers and sideload their ads other way, like the YouTube app on Android or any ad-funded app. If you cannot attack the enemy from within you have to surround him.
You have lots of devices and/or share your LAN/WiFi with others and want to serve your legacy of ad-free browsing with just being connected to the network

To be clear: This tutorial is way not bulletproof nor it is dedicated to total newbies and there will probably be tons of room for improvements. Some basic knowledge about Linux, especially Debian and networking is highly recommended. Though if you have questions do not hesitate to get in touch with me on Twitter I may do a kind of bulletproof tutorial from scratch if someone sponsors me a new OrangePi One SBC or any other more expensive board :-P. I decided to continue this in English as you may have noticed. Simply to get more reach.

EPLAN network license over the internet – cheap and dirty

Preamble

As some of you might already have guessed I am doing electrical stuff in my employment, including electrical engineering. For this purpose our company utilised Eplan Electrical P8. Other examples for such an engineering software would be Elcad, AutoCAD Electrical or WSCAD and some more. Just Google for it if you want further information.

Licensing

Eplan using USB dongles to protect their software from piracy. The dongle has to be connected to your computer in order to start the software and keep it running. Removing the dongle causing the software to stop working until you either reconnect the dongle or close it.
If you want to use Eplan on another PC you have to hand over your dongle. This is quite impractical especially if your company has multiple workstations in different places but does not want to invest in more of these quite expensive Eplan licenses.

The solution for this issue is buying a so called network license. You still will receive a dongle which has to be connected to any PC which later will serve as license server. Eplan utilizing DCOM services to achieve this.

From time to time I crawl through multiple websites around the world searching for a good-to-go every day carry (or EDC for short) pick kit. Unfortunately I could not find one that perfectly fits my needs.
No doubt there are lots of nice kits out there like the Peterson Eagles Nest, the Sparrows Tuxedo or even the Dangerfield Praxis pick. However all of them have disadvantages for my taste. For example the Peterson handles are very thick and bulky, so they would take up LOTS of room in the pick case. The Sparrows Tuxedo does not contain a pry bar and the Praxis Kit case is way too big.

Master Lock 410 busted open

As you may have seen on Twitter I got myself a Master Lock model 410. These locks are known to be great training locks.

Master Lock is kind a huge contrariness. They have padlocks well resistant against physical attacks but contain poor cores. You all know the “ML number 3” with their crappy four pin - no security pins - core.
Then they have very weak padlocks with plastic housing like the model 410. They can be sawed open in no time. However they contain a little bit more challenging key way, a fully populated six pin core and what is even more weird is that they are all security pins.

Anyways. As stated before I obtained one of these ML410 and picked it in a few minutes. But I wanted to dig a little bit further and know what is really inside and if I can reuse the core in a much tougher padlock.

So I gone ahead and sawed the adhesive joints and cracked the baby open.

Vor einer Weile bin ich über ein scheinbar von Fans erstelltes Remaster des Albums … And Justice for All von Metallica gestolpert. Dies ist in voller Länge auf YouTube¹ verfügbar. Der Grund für den neuen Mix war eine neue/verstärkte Tonspur für den Bass². Dieses Ding schimpft sich “… And Justice for Jason”. Sehr nett anzuhören. Richtig guter Sound.

Finally I managed to defeat the last of Bosnianbill’s padlocks he sent me over one year ago (I do not count the two Medecos also being in the pile because picking those is way beyond my skills. I managed to pick one pin but that was it. Anyway that is a story for another post).

Pi-hole – Erfahrung nach gut einer Woche

Nachdem Pi-Hole nun knapp zwei Wochen im Einsatz ist hier ein paar Erfahrungswerte.

Nach der Einrichtung von Pi-Hole bemerkte ich, dass das Aufrufen von Webseiten auf meinem Mobiltelefon wesentlich langsamer funktionierte als zuvor. Zunächste dachte ich an ein Problem mit dem Drahtlosnetzwerk, aber auf weiteren Testgeräten hatte ich das gleiche Phänomen.
Zunächst erfolglos in der Ursachenforschung bin ich dann auf einen zu dem zeitpunkt taufrischen Beitrag im dortigen Forum gestolpert. Glücklicherweise hat doch ein anderer Nutzer seine Lösung für das Problem vorgestellt.

Vor einer Weile bin ich zufällig über das Projekt Pi-Hole gestolpert.
Grob umrissen geht es darum sich einen Bastelrechner, etwa einen Raspberri-Pi oder ein Äquivalent anzuschaffen und diesen im Heimnetzwerk die Namensauflösung zu überlassen.
Anfragen an in Webseiten eingebettete Werbeträger führen dann ins nichts und werden erst gar nicht geladen.
Jeder, der sich per WiFi oder LAN mit dem Netzwerk verbindet genießt automatisch Werbefreiheit.

Over the time I got myself a couple of lock picks and tools which I want to show you here.

The pick bag comes from a company called spooXe in Berlin. I had a smaller one as well but I quickly ran out of space.
These cases are kind a unique. They are hand made and the material comes from recycled German nuclear fallout shelter hand towels. The ZS-BUND (German civil defense association) logo looks really nice on it, don’t you think?

Vorwort

Diese kleine Geschichte basiert auf einem RPG Thread im Angel’s Destiny Forum, welches aber schon lange offline gegangen ist, weil es ausgestorben ist. Ich hab lange beim Admin nachbohren müssen um wenigstens einen Teil der RPGs zu bekommen und diese neu zu schreiben bzw. weiter zu erzählen. Leider hab ich nur die Beschreibung des Magiers und sein Handeln in der Schenke bekommen, somit musste ich vieles neu erfinden und hoffe in etwa das getroffen zu haben, was die damaligen Autoren (Mitglieder im Angel’s Destiny) geschrieben haben. Diese Geschichte geht an alle die diesen Thread damals gelesen und Einträge geschrieben haben. Ein besonderer Gruß geht damit an die Administratoren, DarkSilence und Messia und an die Mitglieder th0m, azraelgirl, Shyangel und Angeltears und alle anderen die ich vergessen habe (es ist doch schon so lange her).

Ich sollte weniger South Park schauen…

Wie der Name schon sagt habe ich ein bisschen Zeit investiert den Blog wieder online zu bringen. Es wird jedoch ein kompletter Neustart. Hintergründe zum Namen, vergangenes usw. gibt es unter What why?
